When my son turned one, I spent hours researching the perfect gifts. I wanted toys and activities that would grow with him rather than being forgotten after a few weeks.

Now that he’s recently turned two, I can confidently say which gifts have stood the test of time and are still played with regularly in our house.

1. Magnetic Tiles (Magnatiles)

If there’s one toy I recommend to every parent, it’s magnetic tiles. At one, they were great for exploring colours, shapes, and how magnets work. Now at two, my son loves helping build towers, houses, roads, and all sorts of creations.

They’re open-ended, encourage creativity, and are one of the few toys that seem to grow with your child.

2. A Balance Bike or Ride-On Car

While your child might not immediately master a balance bike at one, it’s still a fantastic investment. My son took a little time to gain confidence, but now it’s one of his favourite outdoor activities.

Ride-on cars are also brilliant for developing coordination, balance, and independence.

3. Touch and Feel Books

Books have been a constant favourite in our home. Touch and feel books are especially engaging for younger toddlers as they encourage sensory exploration and interaction.

Even now, my son still enjoys revisiting some of his favourites.

4. A Swing Set

If you have the space, a swing set has been one of the best purchases we’ve made.

My son uses ours almost every day and it’s something he has never lost interest in. It gets us outdoors, encourages active play, and provides endless entertainment.

5. VTech Toot-Toot Cars

These have been played with consistently for over a year. They’re durable, interactive, and can be combined with different track pieces to create new layouts and adventures.

They’ve definitely earned their place in our toy rotation.

6. A Simple Ball

Sometimes the simplest gifts are the best.

A ball can be kicked, thrown, rolled, chased, bounced, and used in countless games. It’s great for developing coordination and encourages active play both indoors and outdoors.

7. A TonieBox

This was definitely one of our bigger purchases, but, in our opinion, it has been worth every penny.

We use ours multiple times a day, whether it’s for stories, songs, winding down before bed, or providing a little entertainment during quiet time. It’s simple enough for toddlers to operate independently, which is a huge bonus, and the range of characters means you can gradually build a collection around your child’s interests.

8. Stacking Cups

These have probably given us the best value for money of any toy we own.

They’ve been used for stacking, nesting, sorting, bath time, sand play, water play, and imaginative games. They’re simple, affordable, and incredibly versatile.

9. Shape Sorters

Shape sorters are brilliant for developing problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination.

They can be frustrating at first, but it’s amazing to watch your toddler’s confidence grow as they figure out where each shape belongs.

10. A Soft Play / Petting Zoo Membership

Not every gift has to be something that fits under the tree or wraps up in a box. If your local soft play or petting zoo offers memberships, this can be one of the most-used gifts of all.

For us, having somewhere safe and stimulating to burn off energy has been invaluable, and the soft play can be used on rainy days. If you’re flexible and able to visit during off-peak times, memberships can work out surprisingly cost-effective and provide entertainment all year round.

Final Thoughts

When choosing gifts for a one-year-old, I always recommend looking for toys that can grow alongside them. The gifts that have lasted in our house are the ones that encourage creativity, movement, exploration, and independent play.

The best toy isn’t always the most expensive—sometimes it’s a simple ball or a set of stacking cups that gets the most use.

What gifts have stood the test of time in your house? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
