One of the biggest perks of having a toddler or preschooler is being able to enjoy attractions while schools are still in session.
The weeks before the summer holidays can be the perfect time to explore, with shorter queues, quieter play areas and a more relaxed pace for little ones.
If you’re looking for ideas to make the most of this special window, here are some of our favourite activities.
Soft Play
Love it or hate it, soft play is often much quieter during school hours.
Little ones can enjoy:
- Climbing frames
- Ball pits
- Slides
- Role play areas
Without the bigger children around, younger toddlers often feel more confident exploring independently.
We love Partyman World especially because it has a designated area for under 3s.
Swimming
Weekday swimming sessions can be a completely different experience compared to holiday periods.
Look out for:
- Toddler splash sessions
- Family swim times
- Warm teaching pools
Many little ones feel more comfortable building water confidence when the pool is less busy.
Zoos and Wildlife Parks
Zoos are one of our favourite toddler days out.
Children can:
- Spot their favourite animals
- Burn off energy walking around
- Enjoy outdoor play areas
- Learn about nature and wildlife
Weekdays often mean easier parking, quieter paths and better views at animal enclosures.
We love Colchester Zoo and Call of the Wild.

Aquariums
Aquariums can be magical for toddlers.
Watching colourful fish, sharks and rays glide past the glass can keep little ones entertained for surprisingly long periods.
They’re also ideal for rainy days when outdoor plans aren’t possible.
Museums
Many museums now offer fantastic family-friendly exhibits.
Look for:
- Interactive displays
- Sensory experiences
- Children’s discovery areas
- Hands-on activities
Don’t worry about seeing everything – toddlers are often happiest exploring just a few exhibits at their own pace.
Farms
Children love seeing farm animals up close.
Many farms also offer:
- Tractor rides
- Sand pits
- Indoor play areas
- Feeding experiences
These make wonderful days out that combine learning and play.
We love Marsh Farm and Old McDonald’s Farm.
Parks and Gardens
Never underestimate a simple park visit.
Botanical gardens, country parks and large public gardens often have:
- Open spaces to run
- Ducks to feed
- Flowers to spot
- Nature trails
Bring a picnic and you’ve got an inexpensive day out.
I highly recommend Hyde Hall and I do suggest getting an RHS membership!
Libraries
Libraries can be a hidden gem for preschool families.
Many offer:
- Story sessions
- Craft activities
- Sensory play
- Children’s areas
And best of all, they’re usually free.
Garden Centres
A surprisingly toddler-friendly option!
Many garden centres now have:
- Play areas
- Fish ponds
- Cafés
- Seasonal displays
They’re a lovely low-pressure outing, especially if you only have a few hours.
Final Thoughts
The weeks before the summer holidays are a wonderful opportunity to explore with your little ones while many attractions are still relatively quiet.
Whether it’s a trip to the zoo, a swim, a morning at soft play or simply a picnic in the park, these everyday adventures often become the memories we treasure most.
So pack some snacks, grab the changing bag and make the most of those quieter days before the summer rush begins!
